Mexico’s attorney general has cited irregularities in an investigation into a alleged cartel killing site and training camp in the western state of Jalisco. The ranch, found by authorities in September 2024, yielded hundreds of personal items and charred bone fragments after a search collective visited six months later.
Alejandro Gertz Manero, who took over the investigation last week, accused local authorities in Jalisco of failing to register evidence, process vehicles, and analyze locations at the ranch. He also claimed that federal prosecutors were not informed about the site, which is standard procedure.
Gertz Manero blamed the state prosecutor’s office for the irregularities, despite the National Guard carrying out an operation at the site last year. The investigation still lacks concrete evidence to confirm whether the ranch was used to cremate bodies or train cartel members.
The Jalisco Search Warriors group shared images of human bone fragments and personal items, sparking vigils over the weekend for the victims of the alleged site. A video showing masked men identifying themselves as the Jalisco New Generation cartel questioned the motivations of the searchers.
