Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed confidence that a tariff war with the United States can be avoided, following a phone call with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday. However, her statement did not clarify who made which offer.
Sheinbaum stated flatly that there will be no potential tariff war at her morning news briefing. On social media, she also claimed that migrants and caravans are taken care of before they reach the US border. This stance appears to reflect a long-standing reality in Mexico, where migrant caravans have often been blocked, harassed, or prevented from reaching the border.
US President Joe Biden hopes Trump will reconsider his plan to impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada, saying it could damage relationships with close allies. The proposed tariffs would affect a wide range of products, including iconic Mexican avocados, which supply 75% of US guacamole. If implemented, the tariffs could result in $266 billion in tax collections, primarily borne by US families, importers, and companies.
Mexico is preparing a list of retaliatory tariffs if Trump goes ahead with his plans for import duties.
