MGH Completes Second Genetically-Edited Pig Kidney Transplant

Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) has made history once again, successfully completing its second genetically-edited pig kidney transplant. Just over a year after the groundbreaking procedure that marked the first of its kind in the world, MGH has now achieved this milestone for a second time. The recipient was 66-year-old Tim Andrews from New Hampshire, who had been suffering from end-stage kidney disease and was on dialysis for more than two years.

The transplant took place at the hospital, with Andrews being discharged just one week after the surgery. According to doctors and MGH officials, Andrews is currently doing well, showing no signs of rejecting the organ. This achievement is a significant step forward in the field of transplantation and holds promise for patients in need of kidney transplants.

The success of this procedure marks an important breakthrough in the development of xenotransplantation, a process that involves transplanting organs from one species to another, in hopes of solving the shortage of available organs for human transplantation. With this achievement, MGH continues to push the boundaries of medical innovation and improves patient outcomes.
