Miami-Dade’s Democratic Party and Venezuelan exile advocates have urged the Trump administration to revisit its decision on Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelans. The current expiration date in April 2023 would leave 256,000 Venezuelans without status. Miami-Dade Commissioner Damian Pardo sponsored a resolution calling for continued TPS for individuals from countries facing instability and harm, including Venezuela.
The Democratic Party chair, Laura Kelley, stated that the decision not to extend TPS would put the lives of those deported at risk due to worsening conditions in Venezuela under its brutal dictator. The 2021 TPS designation is set to expire in September. The resolution urges President Trump and US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem to continue granting TPS.
The decision has been criticized by critics, including Maria Corina Vega, who stated that the conditions in Venezuela have worsened, particularly after the summer’s fraudulent election. Miami Commissioner Pardo argued that the values of a country founded on hope for those fleeing violence and persecution are undermined by President Trump’s actions.
