Actor and Oscar-winner Michael Douglas has expressed concerns about democracy in the US under the Trump administration, describing it as “flirting with autocracy.” Addressing a press conference at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, where he presented a newly restored print of Miloš Forman’s classic “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” Douglas said that the nation is vulnerable and needs to be protected.
Douglas praised the Czechs for their hard work in gaining freedom and independence, but lamented that politics have become profit-driven. He believes that democracy is under threat due to the influence of money in politics and people entering the field solely for financial gain.
The actor also shared his own personal struggles with throat cancer, which he fought using chemotherapy and radiation treatment. He has since stepped away from acting, citing a desire to prioritize his health and avoid the risk of injury or death on set.
While Douglas acknowledged that he is not retired in spirit, as he would return to acting if something special came up, he has no plans to actively pursue new roles at this time.
