Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner is back with her fourth studio album, “For Melancholy Brunettes (and Sad Women)”, which delves into the complexities of time, grief, and melancholy. The album cover, adorned with a sumptuous painting featuring a skull, flowers, and oysters, reflects Zauner’s introspective approach to the subject matter.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Zauner discussed her creative process, which involved immersing herself in Korean language and culture while living in Seoul for a year. This experience influenced her desire to capture a specific kind of feeling of being “on edge” through the album’s chord changes and progressions.
The album marks a departure from Zauner’s earlier work, with a focus on pensive, anticipatory grief about the passage of time. She has also shared that she recorded the album during a period of separation, which allowed her to approach it with clarity and precision. The result is an album that is both deeply personal and universally relatable.
When asked about self-care, Zauner emphasized the importance of taking care of one’s physical and mental health, particularly on tour. She has implemented measures such as bringing a yoga mat and stretching, eating Asian food, and being sober during her tour time to prioritize her well-being.
Zauner is also excited to embark on tour with the same musicians from her “Jubilee” tour, citing their camaraderie and shared passion for music. The tour will feature performances at iconic venues such as the Ryman in Nashville and Union Transfer in Philadelphia.
With “For Melancholy Brunettes (and Sad Women)”, Zauner continues to push the boundaries of her artistry, exploring themes that resonate with listeners worldwide.
