Michigan basketball suffered a crushing 93-73 loss to Illinois at Crisler Center on Sunday, dropping the Wolverines a game behind rival Michigan State in the Big Ten standings. The defeat marked U-M’s ninth straight loss to Illinois, and it seemed like the team’s magic had worn off after nine wins in their previous 11 games.
Vladislav Goldin led the charge with 22 points, but his teammates struggled to keep up on the glass, allowing Illinois to grab 19 offensive rebounds. The Illini’s second-chance points proved costly, as they outscored Michigan 12-0 over a nine-minute stretch in the second half.
Illinois’ Tre White and Kasparas Jakucionis paced the team with 19 and 17 points respectively, while Goldin’s performance was the only bright spot for U-M. The loss highlights the Wolverines’ struggles on both ends of the court, as they made just four of 18 three-pointers and committed five turnovers.
Despite the setback, Michigan still has a chance to make a push for the Big Ten title if they can beat Maryland next week. However, it’s clear that U-M needs to step up its game if they want to compete with the top teams in the conference.
The loss was a tough pill for the Wolverines to swallow, especially after their impressive recent run. With two games left in the regular season, Michigan must regroup and refocus if they hope to salvage any hopes of winning the Big Ten title.
