Michigan Flu Deaths Spike, Health Officials Urge Precautions

Two children in Kent County have died of influenza, bringing Michigan’s total to five deaths this flu season. The state’s total pediatric flu deaths since 2020 stand at seven, with the deadliest year being 2023 with three reported fatalities.

“We are deeply saddened by these young lives lost to influenza,” said Dr. Adam London, KCHD Health Officer. “Flu can be mild for some but poses serious risks for others.” The health department encourages those without a flu shot to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

Current flu activity is considered “very high” in Michigan, with over 15,000 reported cases last week alone. To curb the spread of the flu, KCHD recommends:

– Getting vaccinated
– Washing hands frequently with soap and water
– Covering mouths when sneezing or coughing
– Cleaning surfaces touched often
– Staying home if feeling ill
– Taking antiviral medication to limit symptom severity
– Consulting a doctor for high-risk individuals
