Michigan QB Bryce Underwood Shows Promise Amid Glimpses of Growing Pains

Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood showed flashes of his potential as the Wolverines’ top-rated recruit, but also struggled with growing pains in their spring game. Underwood was 12 for 26 for 187 yards, with a long touchdown pass to tight end Jalen Hoffman.

The freshman faced challenges, including fumbles, penalties, and dropped passes, but coach Sherrone Moore praised his performance, saying he made “really good throws” and had areas to improve. Underwood acknowledged that pressure from his high school recruitment is an issue, but remains focused on improving.

Underwood faces competition for playing time with sophomore Jadyn Davis and Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene, setting up a battle for the starting role ahead of the season opener against Fresno State on August 30. Despite expectations to live up to the hype, Underwood is motivated to prove himself, citing lofty goals, including multiple Heismans and a national championship.

Underwood’s recruitment featured high-profile connections, including Tom Brady and Oracle founder Larry Ellison. His father, Jay Underwood, estimates his son will earn more than $15 million at Michigan, but Underwood wants to earn everything he can, rather than relying on his reputation.

Hoffman praised Underwood for being humble and hungry for improvement, saying “he’s not riding off his success in high school.” Underwood has participated in extensive practice sessions and is adjusting to college football after a strong high school career.
