Michigan Reports 2 Flu Deaths, CDC Says Hospital Visits Highest in 15 Years

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) announced on Friday, Feb. 14, that two children have died from the flu, including one from Genesee County. The deaths are among the first reported flu-related deaths for the 2024-2025 influenza season.

According to Dr. Michela Corsi, medical director at Genesee County Health Department, children under 5 are more vulnerable to severe cases of the flu due to their limited exposure to the virus. However, getting vaccinated is still the best way to protect oneself and one’s child from the flu.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that hospital visits for the flu in Michigan are at their highest levels in 15 years. Locally, Corsi said they are seeing a lot of Influenza A strain cases.

MDHHS reported 57 influenza-associated pediatric deaths nationwide this season, with pediatric vaccine coverage being the lowest it has been in recent seasons at 15.1%. The CDC reports nearly 10,000 flu-related hospitalizations, with an increase every week since November 30.

Symptoms to look out for include shortness of breath, chest pain, and mental changes. Parents are advised to check with their doctor if their child is sick. To find a flu vaccine near you, call your healthcare provider or local health department, or visit vaccines.gov.

The Genesee County Health Department is urging parents to take precautions to prevent the spread of the flu, particularly among young children. Corsi emphasized that getting vaccinated and taking early treatment with antiviral medication can help prevent severe illness.
