Michigan has confirmed two additional child deaths due to influenza, bringing the total number of pediatric flu-related fatalities this season to five. The state’s health department reports a surge in cases related to the flu, with over 15,000 hospital visits attributed to influenza-related illnesses.
According to data from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the US has seen an increase in pediatric flu deaths, with 86 children having lost their lives to the illness as of February 21. In contrast, before December 21, 2024, only 2% of hospital visits were attributed to influenza.
Experts attribute Michigan’s struggling flu season to a decline in vaccinations among parents and children. Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, chief medical executive, emphasizes that young children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to severe outcomes from influenza. She also notes that comorbid conditions such as heart disease, lung problems, and kidney disease increase an individual’s risk.
The trend of declining flu vaccinations in Michigan parallels observations seen during previous outbreaks of illnesses like measles and polio. With vaccination rates at approximately 70% of the state’s goal for this season, Dr. Bagdasarian stresses that vaccine-preventable diseases can have severe consequences, particularly among vulnerable populations.
