Two Michigan children have died from the flu, according to the state’s health department. The deaths occurred in Wayne and Genesee counties and were caused by the seasonal Influenza A (H1N1) virus.
Since the start of the 2024-25 season, at least 57 influenza-associated pediatric deaths have been reported nationwide. The latest fatalities are a tragic reminder of the flu’s severity.
Health officials urge parents to get their children vaccinated, as well as pregnant individuals, who can help protect themselves and their baby by getting vaccinated. According to data from the Michigan Care Improvement Registry, only 15.1% of pediatric influenza vaccine coverage in Michigan this season is at risk.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend flu vaccines for anyone over six months old. The state’s health department says it’s not too late to get a flu shot to prevent severe complications like hospitalization and death.
