Michigan State defeated Maryland 58-55 on Wednesday night, thanks to a thrilling buzzer-beater from Tre Holloman. The shot, which was taken from midcourt and sailed through the hoop for a swish, gave the Spartans a half-game lead in the Big Ten standings.
Coach Tom Izzo said that Holloman’s shot was not lucky, but rather the result of inspired basketball by his team. Izzo praised Holloman for making two midcourt shots in the last two games and credited him with the game-winning score.
The win marks Michigan State’s first game-winning buzzer-beater since 2010, when Korie Lucious hit a three-pointer against Maryland. The Spartans will now sit atop the Big Ten standings, just one half-game ahead of Michigan.
Maryland coach Kevin Willard acknowledged that his team had a tough night, but praised Ja’Kobi Gillespie for his efforts. Despite missing a crucial 3-pointer, Willard trusts Gillespie to make clutch shots and believes he should have taken the shot himself.
For Holloman, the buzzer-beater proved that midcourt shooting is more than just a joke at practice. He said he knew the shot was good after practicing it daily with his teammates.
