Michigan to Witness Rare Full Buck Moon on July 10

Michigan residents are in for a treat as the state is set to witness a rare Full Buck Moon on July 10. The full moon, named after the antlers of male deer that grow during this time, will be visible from the southeast throughout the evening.

The unique properties of this summer full moon make it stand out from others. Due to its position in relation to the sun and the Earth’s rotation, the Full Buck Moon appears larger and lower in the sky than usual. This phenomenon is enhanced by a rare event called major lunar standstill, which occurs every 18.6 years.

As the moon rises, it will take on a golden hue due to Rayleigh scattering, causing warm effects reminiscent of sunrises and sunsets. According to Native American traditions, this full moon has been given various names, including Feather Moulting Moon, Salmon Moon, Berry Moon, and others.

The Full Buck Moon is just the beginning of a unique summer full moon series in Michigan. On August 9, the Sturgeon Moon will be visible, named after the fish that were once more easily caught during this time of year. With multiple names and traditions surrounding each month’s full moon, there’s something for everyone to appreciate in the celestial displays of Michigan’s summer sky.

This special event is a reminder of the beauty and uniqueness of our natural world. As the Full Buck Moon rises high in the southeastern sky, residents can look forward to enjoying this rare spectacle and honoring the rich cultural heritage behind it.
