The Kent County Health Department is urging all residents to be aware of the bird flu threat and take prevention measures to avoid infections. According to KCHD Director Adam London, while the risk to human health remains low, the ongoing outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) poses a significant threat.
The current HPAI outbreak, the worst in U.S. history, has spread to dairy cattle and humans, with two reported cases in Michigan farmworkers. London emphasizes the importance of simple precautions, such as avoiding contact with wild birds, washing hands thoroughly after bird contact, and monitoring pets to prevent transmission.
Additionally, hunters and backyard poultry owners are advised to take extra precautions to prevent exposure to sick or dead birds. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed 67 human cases of bird flu in the US since 2022, with a recent reported death in Louisiana. Michigan has reported 46 total outbreaks, mostly in April and May 2024.
Residents are advised to report unusual bird deaths to the Department of Natural Resources and follow basic safety guidelines for food, such as cooking poultry products to an internal temperature of 165 degrees to kill potential viruses. Those who suspect avian flu in their domestic animals should contact the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) at 800.292.3939 or 517.373.0440.
