Mickey 17 Spoilers: Robert Pattinson’s Underdog Victory

Robert Pattinson’s character in the sci-fi satire “Mickey 17” faces numerous obstacles, but ultimately survives and thrives despite being a copy of himself. In this movie, directed by Oscar-winning writer/director Bong Joon Ho, Mickey Barnes signs up for a colonizing expedition to a distant icy planet and volunteers for a job that puts him in deadly situations constantly.

Every time he dies, a new version with his memories is printed out, leading to the 17th iteration being thought dead. However, when he comes back, he must figure out how to coexist with his newer self. A common enemy arises: villainous politician Kenneth Marshall, who wants to kill Mickey and wipe out the planet’s indigenous creatures, the Creepers.

In a surprising turn of events, Mickey 17 gains respect among his human co-workers after saving their lives, and when his girlfriend Nasha is put in charge, she lets him blow up the human printer that could have been used against them. The movie ends with Mickey rejecting the hate and vitriol of the world, finding hope and fighting against it.

According to Pattinson, the movie is an extreme version of where life could end up, but it’s a message of hope and self-compassion. “He just wants to have a nice life and be a regular dude,” Pattinson says.
