Microsoft Authenticator Passkey Setup Before August 1st Deadline

Microsoft Authenticator’s password management features are being discontinued on August 1st, but users can set up a passkey to secure online logins. A two-part encrypted code system, where one half is stored securely by the user and the other resides with the service or application, enhances security.

Passkeys eliminate the need for complex passwords, leveraging biometrics like facial recognition, fingerprints, or PINs. However, users must set up individual passkeys for each compatible service or application. Microsoft aims to bolster online security, citing a 7,000 password attacks per second in 2024.

To set up a passkey within Authenticator, open the app, tap on your account, and select “set up a passkey.” The stored passwords remain synced with Microsoft accounts. After August 1st, users can access their old passwords by installing the Microsoft Edge browser and logging in. iOS users need to enable Edge in Settings > General > Autofill & Passwords, while Android users should go to Settings > General management > Passwords and autofill.

Users can export their Authenticator passwords and import them into other password managers. While Authenticator will continue to serve as a tool for multi-factor authentication, its functions are now consolidated within Edge. Users are encouraged to secure their digital credentials ahead of the deadline.
