Microsoft has announced a breakthrough in logical qubit creation, setting a new record with partner Quantinuum. The company is also working with Atom Computing to develop the world’s most powerful quantum machine.
A logical qubit is a higher-level abstraction that combines multiple physical qubits to protect against noise and errors. Microsoft and Quantinuum have demonstrated improved qubit virtualization, creating 12 highly reliable logical qubits on Quantinuum’s H2 machine. This represents the largest number of entangled logical qubits with high fidelity.
The company plans to integrate this technology with Atom Computing’s neutral-atom hardware to create a commercial quantum machine. Microsoft aims to empower governments and organizations to tackle complex problems, such as designing chemicals and materials, simulating chemical reactions, and more.
This breakthrough has significant implications for scientific discovery and commercial adoption of quantum technologies. The partnership between Microsoft, Quantinuum, and Atom Computing is expected to drive innovation and create new job opportunities in the field.
