Fifty years ago, Microsoft opened its doors, introducing a world of technology innovations that touch every part of our lives. Today, the company has grown from six buildings in Redmond to offices in over 190 countries. Despite this growth, one common thread ties Microsoft employees and their communities together: the company’s Give program.
Microsoft’s Give program is fundamental to its culture and values, reflecting a commitment to helping every person and organization on the planet do more. In 2024, contributions reached historic milestones, with nearly 6 million volunteer hours and $1.3 billion in lifetime donations to Washington nonprofits.
The demand for volunteering is growing, with 1,200 employees participating in the Change Agent program, which helps nonprofits on their digital transformation journey. Since its inception, Microsoft employees have donated over $3 billion and provided the equivalent of 1,277 years of volunteering to 36,000 organizations globally.
In Washington state, donations reached a record $88 million, with over 460,000 hours of volunteer time. This commitment is evident in the high participation rate among local employees, with 80% participating in the Give program.
Personal stories of Microsoft employees’ commitment to philanthropy highlight the impact of their efforts. One employee’s personal experience losing her father to colon cancer has driven her support for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Others share that volunteering fosters a sense of connection and purpose, leading them to ask themselves what lasting impact they can make.
Microsoft’s Give program supports long-term initiatives like Northwest Harvest, one of the country’s largest independent food banks, and the Washington State Opportunity Scholarship (WSOS), which removes barriers to education for historically excluded students. The company believes economic growth and opportunity must reach every person, organization, community, and country.
As Microsoft looks forward, its employees’ commitment to philanthropy gives hope that they can rise to today’s challenges and ensure everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
