Microsoft has announced significant changes to its Authenticator app, a tool that generates 2FA codes and stores passwords. Starting June 1, users will no longer be able to save new passwords in the app, which will also phase out autofill functionality by July. After August, saved passwords will be inaccessible in Authenticator.
However, Microsoft advises users with set up passkeys for their accounts to keep Authenticator enabled as the Passkey Provider. The Edge browser will offer password management and autofill functionality, allowing users to access stored credentials securely synced to their Microsoft account.
Other password manager apps are available, offering 2FA code generation, passkey support, and secure autofill capabilities. Users should consider alternative options to ensure seamless password management and security.
