Microsoft Ditches Iconic Blue Screen, Replaces with Black Version

Microsoft has announced it will be scrapping its long-standing “Blue Screen of Death” and replacing it with a new black iteration. The company claims this change is part of an effort to streamline the unexpected restart experience, making it easier and faster for users to recover from system crashes.

The new black screen is set to launch on Windows 11 24H2 devices this summer. Microsoft plans to update the user interface to match the Windows 11 design, reducing downtime during restarts to just two seconds for most users.

This change comes after a major incident in July 2024 when a faulty CrowdStrike update caused widespread system crashes globally. The new black screen is seen as a step towards minimizing disruptions and improving overall user experience.
