Microsoft Edge Adds Passkey Support for Secure Login

Microsoft’s Edge browser now allows users to create and sync passkeys across devices. Passkeys are more secure than passwords and use the FIDO2 open standard, supported by major companies like Apple and Google.

To set up passkeys in Edge, users will be asked if they want to create one when visiting a site that supports them. The passkey is stored in Microsoft’s cloud-encrypted password manager and can be used for login on various devices with fingerprint, facial recognition, or PIN code verification.

However, accessing passkeys on another Windows PC still requires verifying the user’s PIN. A future plugin will enable Edge users to use their passkeys outside the browser on other Windows PCs.

Currently, syncing passkeys in Edge isn’t supported for Microsoft Entra accounts, and mobile device support is not yet available. Users may find better security with third-party password managers like 1Password or Bitwarden.

Note: I simplified the text by removing technical jargon and rephrasing complex sentences to make it easier to understand. I also condensed some information to focus on the main points of the announcement.
