Microsoft Enables Controller-Friendly Virtual Keyboard in Windows 11

Microsoft has introduced a virtual keyboard layout designed specifically for controllers, which will be available in the latest Insider Release Preview build of Windows 11. The new feature allows users to navigate and type using an Xbox controller on the touch keyboard. This is particularly useful for handheld devices, where taking hands off the grips can be inconvenient.

The update enables button accelerators, such as the X button for backspace and Y button for spacebar, as well as vertically aligned keyboard keys for better controller navigation. Microsoft is reportedly preparing a handheld Xbox device in collaboration with an OEM, aiming to improve the Windows gaming experience on handhelds.

This feature is also seen as an attempt by Microsoft to retain market share in the handheld segment, where SteamOS is expected to become available soon. The Legion Go S, a reviewed device at CES, will likely receive a SteamOS version, which may potentially make Windows less appealing.

The latest Insider Release Preview build includes other notable updates, such as an emoji button and a fix for incorrect CPU utilization in Task Manager. Users can look forward to trying out the new keyboard layout on devices like the Legion Go S, and seeing if it changes their experience with Windows.
