Microsoft Ends Support for Older Windows 11 Printer Drivers

Microsoft has ended support for its older printer drivers, V3 and V4, which means millions of devices are now on borrowed time. This change affects legacy printers that rely on these drivers, leaving users with a limited window to update or replace their printers.

The move is part of Microsoft’s efforts to modernize the Windows print platform, following changes made in Windows 10 21H2. As of January 15, new printer driver submissions are being blocked by default and will go through a manual review process. Existing drivers on Windows Update can still be updated, but only on a case-by-case basis.

This change may cause issues for users who rely on older printers that do not support newer driver architectures. Microsoft recommends updating to supported drivers or upgrading to more modern printing solutions if problems arise.

In the future, Windows will prioritize its built-in Microsoft IPP class driver over third-party printer drivers when multiple options are available. Third-party updates delivered via Windows Update will be restricted to security-related fixes only by July 1, 2027.

The decision aims to shift responsibility for legacy hardware support back to manufacturers and potentially lay the groundwork for a harder lean on Windows Protected Print Mode, which restricts printing to Microsoft’s class drivers.
