Microsoft Fixes Windows 10 Enrollment Issue for Extended Security Updates

Microsoft has released an emergency out-of-band update to resolve an issue preventing Windows 10 users from enrolling in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. The update addresses a problem with the Windows 10 Consumer ESU enrollment process, which can cause failures during enrollment.

To fix this issue, users need to install KB5071959 cumulative update and then enroll their device in the ESU program using the ESU wizard. After successful enrollment, devices will start receiving Essential security updates via the Windows Update service.

Users who have not enrolled their Windows 10 systems in the Consumer ESU program should follow these steps:
– Check for updates
– Install KB5071959 update and reboot
– Run ESU enrollment wizard
– Enroll device in ESU program
– Wait for latest monthly security update to be offered

This update is necessary due to a recent patch Tuesday release, which caused incorrect end-of-support warnings on some Windows 10 systems. Microsoft is urging users to enroll in the ESU program as soon as possible to avoid missing out on future security updates.

Note: Windows 10 reached its end of support in October 2025, but users can delay upgrading to Windows 11 by enrolling in the ESU program for a fee. Home users may also be eligible for free enrollment with their Microsoft account.
