Microsoft is taking steps to make the world a less embarrassing place by introducing a new feature called “Digital Signage Mode” in Windows 11. This mode will automatically hide blue screens of death from public displays for just 15 seconds, eliminating the need for manual intervention.
In the past, seeing a blue screen on a public display was a rare but often humorous sight. However, Microsoft wants to eliminate this phenomenon altogether. The new feature is designed to be used in situations where computers are not properly set up or monitored, such as at events or in high-traffic areas like train stations.
The Digital Signage Mode is separate from the existing Kiosk mode, which locks down Windows to a single platform or application. While Kiosk mode is ideal for interactive displays, it’s not necessary for non-interactive screens that show advertisements.
Microsoft also introduced other stability-based improvements, including a more comprehensive restore point system and enhanced remote access capabilities through the Intune portal. Additionally, Copilot was showcased with new AI features, but no further details were provided on this front.
While the Digital Signage Mode may not eliminate all instances of blue screens of death entirely, it’s a step in the right direction towards reducing their visibility in public areas. With its 15-second timeout and automatic hiding feature, Microsoft is hoping to make our world a less embarrassing place, one blue screen at a time.
