Microsoft has strengthened its requirement for upgrading to Windows 11, making Trusted Platform Module 2.0 (TPM 2.0) a necessity for secure and future-proof updates. This means users with unsupported hardware may face difficulties in upgrading.
The security feature is crucial for a secure and future-proof Windows 11 experience, featuring advanced elements like Windows Hello for Business, BitLocker disk encryption, and Credential Guard. Microsoft has patched a loophole that previously allowed circumvention of the hardware requirement verification process when activating Windows 11 on unsupported devices.
As Windows 10’s end-of-support date approaches, users can upgrade to Windows 11 if their PC is supported or transition to Mac or Linux. However, this may lead to an “unprecedented increase in discarded computers” as users without compatible hardware opt for alternative solutions.
