Microsoft Redesigns Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) in Windows 11

Microsoft is overhauling its iconic Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) error message in Windows 11, swapping the traditional design for a sleeker, more modern look. The new design features a simplified interface that closely resembles the black screen displayed during system updates.

The revamped BSOD drops the familiar blue color and frowning face, instead opting for a clean and minimalistic aesthetic. While it’s unclear whether the final version will remain as a black screen or revert to its traditional blue hue, Windows Insiders can currently test the new design in beta builds of the Beta, Dev, and Canary Channels.

According to Microsoft, the goal of this redesign is to “get users back into productivity as fast as possible” while preserving essential technical information on the screen. The updated BSOD simply displays an error message stating that “your device ran into a problem and needs to restart.”

This change marks the first major overhaul of the BSOD since Windows 8, when Microsoft introduced the now-iconic sad face.
