Microsoft Redesigns Blue Screen of Death for Windows 11

The iconic “Blue Screen of Death” (BSOD) is a familiar sight for many Windows users, but Microsoft is now making a change to its design. In the current preview version of Windows 11 24H2, the error screen has been transformed into a completely black interface, marking a departure from tradition.

Other notable changes include the removal of the sad smiley face and QR code, which were introduced in 2016 as part of Windows 10’s troubleshooting tips. The new text is also shorter and less ominous, stating “Your device ran into a problem and needs to restart.” Instead of using the term “PC,” it simply says “device.”

The specific reason for the crash and error code are displayed at the bottom in smaller text. Microsoft allegedly developed this new system but postponed its release, possibly due to concerns about the blue screen’s iconic reputation.

Some argue that the redesign is an improvement, while others will miss the familiar blue screen. The change was first spotted in preview builds of Windows 11 and may be introduced with a future Patch Tuesday update. However, Microsoft has not yet confirmed when this change will roll out to the public version of Windows 11.
