Microsoft is launching its controversial Recall feature on high-end Windows PCs, despite concerns over user privacy. The feature takes snapshots of a PC screen every few seconds and will be available to users of Microsoft’s AI-branded PCs starting Friday.
The company has improved the security safeguards after backlash from security researchers, who warned that Recall provided an easy target for hackers. Users of Copilot+ PCs, which account for 15% of high-end computers sold in the US during the holiday quarter, will also get new features such as a more intuitive search function and a tool to summon artificially intelligent assistants.
The rollout comes after Microsoft initially pitched Recall as a solution to information overload but faced criticism over data protection. The company has since added biometric user sign-in and disabled the product by default.
