Microsoft has introduced a new gamepad keyboard feature in Windows 11, allowing users to type with an Xbox controller. This improvement enhances the on-screen keyboard’s usability and navigability when using an Xbox controller. The feature is part of ongoing efforts to make Windows more handheld-friendly.
The gamepad keyboard includes shortcuts identical to those used in the Xbox dashboard, including X for backspace, Y for spacebar, and menu button for enter. Microsoft aims to combine the best parts of Windows and Xbox, making it easier for users to navigate with a controller.
The feature first entered beta testing in September and is now available in the Release Preview version. It will be rolled out to all Windows 11 users in the coming weeks and soon after to those who opt into non-security updates.
