A recent bug in Windows 11’s Insider Preview Build (version 26200.5651) has caused the modern startup sound effect to switch back to the iconic Windows Vista chime. The change was noticed by some users who restarted their computers since June 13 and found the familiar chime playing instead of the usual Windows 11 boot sound.
Microsoft acknowledged the issue, labeling it as a bug rather than an intentional feature. In the release notes, the company mentioned that this week’s update includes a “delightful blast from the past,” which plays the Windows Vista boot sound instead of the intended Windows 11 sound.
However, this change is not permanent and will be fixed by Microsoft soon. The exact cause of the bug is still unknown, with some employees jokingly attributing it to their actions, but these claims were later dismissed.
Instead of installing the latest preview build yourself to hear the old chime, users can watch a video from The Verge that showcases the Windows Vista boot sound in action on a modern laptop.
