Microsoft is testing a new way to make sharing files easier with a beta version of Windows 11. The company has introduced a “drag tray” feature that appears when you drag files to the top of the screen, allowing you to drop them directly into frequently used apps like Outlook or WhatsApp.
Additionally, Microsoft is also working on improving Windows Search for Copilot+ PCs, enabling users to find photos stored in the cloud using natural language search. Two new layouts are also being tested for the Start menu, including a name grid view and a category view that groups apps by type.
These features are part of the Windows Insider program, which allows early adopters to try out new updates before they’re released to the general public. To access these features, users need to sign up for the Windows Insider program and ensure their PC is on the correct beta version. However, installing beta software can lead to issues, so it’s essential to backup data before joining.
The drag tray feature can be accessed by selecting the correct beta channel and updating to Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22635.4950 (KB5052078). The enhanced search feature is available in Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3291 (KB5052080), which is currently labeled as an optional update but will become recommended later this year.
Note: Users may need to wait for the updates to roll out gradually, and some features are only supported by personal OneDrive accounts or third-party cloud storage providers.
