Microsoft is preparing to host OpenAI’s GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 artificial intelligence (AI) models on its Azure platform, with launches expected in late February and late May respectively. The tech giant has invested heavily in OpenAI, a leading ChatGPT maker.
GPT-4.5, also known as Orion, will be the company’s last non-chain-of-thought model, generating responses faster by directly providing the final answer without breaking down the query into logical steps. In contrast, chain-of-thought models improve reasoning capabilities by breaking down queries into series of steps.
GPT-5, on the other hand, is expected to integrate OpenAI’s latest o3 reasoning model and unify the company’s o-series and GPT-series models, making it easier for users to choose the best model. The free tier will offer unlimited access to chat at standard intelligence settings, while Plus and Pro subscribers will have access to higher levels of intelligence.
This partnership marks Microsoft’s move closer to achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI), a hypothetical intelligence that enables large language models to think, self-learn, act, and detect problems like humans. With an optimistic Wall Street view, Microsoft stock is currently commanding a Strong Buy consensus rating on TipRanks, with 22.7% upside potential from current levels.
