Microsoft is shutting down its popular communications app Skype in May 2025 as it shifts focus towards the Microsoft Team platform. The company will allow users to switch to Teams for free by using their Skype credentials.
Skype has been an integral part of modern communication and has supported numerous meaningful moments, according to Jeff Teper, president of collaborative apps and platforms at Microsoft. To ease the transition, Microsoft is offering a seamless migration process to Teams.
Existing customers can continue using their paid features until their next renewal period ends, while new users will not be able to access paid Skype features after the platform’s closure. Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011 for $8.5 billion and has seen its user base grow from an estimated 180 million to over 300 million by 2016.
