Microsoft is facing criticism over its ties to Israel, with reports suggesting that Azure technology is being used by Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) to surveil civilians in Gaza and the West Bank. The company has responded by stating it will conduct a formal review into the allegations.
In July, Microsoft laid off 9,000 workers, including many within its video game division. Despite repeated requests for comment on the situation unfolding at Arkane in France, where union workers published an open letter in support of the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement, Microsoft has refused to discuss the concerns of current and former employees.
The company’s refusal to comment on the allegations has sparked protests by current and former employees. A group of around 50 people gathered at Microsoft’s Redmond headquarters in May, holding a “No Azure for Apartheid” protest.
Microsoft will now conduct an external review into the allegations, which were raised by The Guardian. The company states it will share the findings with the public once they are complete.
The situation has sparked controversy within the gaming industry, with some developers speaking out against Microsoft’s ties to Israel. Meanwhile, others have criticized the company’s handling of layoffs and its refusal to comment on employee concerns.
