Microsoft Unveils AI-Generated Quake II Tech Demo in Xbox AI Era

Microsoft has released an AI-generated version of the classic game Quake II as a tech demo for its Muse AI model, which is part of its gaming platform Copilot. The demo is playable in a browser and features a basic level with blurry enemies and interactions.

The new demo showcases Microsoft’s Muse AI model running at a higher resolution than initially demonstrated and at a playable frame rate. However, the experience remains limited.

Microsoft is positioning Muse as an AI tool for game developers to prototype games and improve classic titles like Quake II. The company aims to use Muse to bring old games to modern hardware, making them portable across various platforms.

In February, Microsoft’s Gaming CEO Phil Spencer discussed the potential of Muse in preserving classic games by learning gameplay data and video. This technology has opened up new opportunities for game preservation and development.

As Microsoft continues to train Muse on more games, users can expect to see more short interactive AI game experiences in Copilot Labs soon. Additionally, the company is working on transforming Copilot into a coaching tool that assists players with tips and guides, which will be available to Windows Insiders through Copilot Vision.
