Microsoft Unveils AI-Powered Recall Feature for Copilot Plus PCs

Microsoft has launched its highly anticipated Recall feature for Copilot Plus PCs, alongside improved Windows search and a new Click to Do tool. The feature, which was originally delayed due to security concerns, is now available as an opt-in experience that doesn’t require enabling if you’re concerned about privacy implications.

Recall is designed to improve how users search their PCs by taking snapshots of everything they do on the device. This allows for easier searching of vague memories instead of file names. The feature has been overhauled with improved security measures, including encryption and filtering of sensitive data by default.

According to Kevin Beaumont, a security researcher who previously raised concerns about Recall, Microsoft has made “serious efforts” to secure the feature. However, Beaumont notes that some users may still experience issues with filtering sensitive apps and websites.

The new Click to Do tool, which is similar to Google’s Circle to Search, allows users to activate it by pressing the Windows key + left mouse click. It provides actions for text or images on the screen, including summarizing text or removing objects from images.

Recall, Click to Do, and improved Windows search will be available today across all Copilot Plus PCs, with some limitations applying to AMD- and Intel-powered devices. The features will also be available in a variety of languages and regions, but Microsoft has confirmed that they won’t be available in EU countries and Iceland until later this year.
