Microsoft has introduced a new command-line text editor called Edit on Windows, designed to simplify the editing process for developers. The tool allows users to edit files directly in the command line, eliminating the need to switch between applications or windows.
Edit on Windows is part of Microsoft’s broader efforts to enhance the developer experience on Windows. It will be available as an open-source project and can be accessed using “edit” in a command prompt. The editor is small, lightweight, and has key bindings for all menu options.
Developers will be able to edit multiple files and switch between them using the Ctrl+P shortcut. Additionally, Edit supports word wrapping, find and replace functionality, match case, and regular expression support.
Microsoft’s goal was to create a modeless editor that would avoid common issues with existing editors like Vim. The new editor is available in the Windows Insider program for public testing, and more information can be found on its GitHub repository.
Microsoft has also rebranded its Windows Dev Home tool as Advanced Windows Settings, which provides developers with easy access to customize their Windows experience.
