Midea Recalls 1.7 Million Window Air Conditioners Due to Mold Growth Risks

Midea, a leading air conditioner manufacturer, is recalling approximately 1.7 million of its U and U Plus window air conditioners sold in the US and Canada due to potential mold growth risks. The recall was initiated by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (USCPSC) after receiving reports of mold growth and associated health issues.

The unique U-shaped design of the air conditioners, launched in 2020, can sometimes prevent water from draining quickly enough, leading to mold growth that poses respiratory issues or other infections. According to the USCPSC, at least 152 reports of mold have been received, including cases where consumers experienced symptoms such as respiratory infections, allergic reactions, coughing, sneezing, and sore throats.

The affected air conditioners were sold under various brand names, including Midea, Danby, Frigidaire, Insignia, and Comfort Aire, at major retailers like Costco, Menards, Home Depot, Best Buy, and Amazon. Consumers can find a full list of the recalled models on the USPSC and Midea websites.

Midea is offering both repairs and refunds for the affected air conditioners. However, refunds are being prorated based on purchase date or unit’s date of manufacture. Consumers who prefer not to receive a partial refund may return their units using a free shipping label or provide a photo showing that the unit’s unplugged power cord has been cut.

Consumers are encouraged to contact Midea to arrange for a free repair, which may involve scheduling a technician or receiving a DIY repair kit with necessary hardware. Those who opt for repairs are advised to inspect their unit prior to continuing use by visiting Midea’s website for instructions.
