A group of at least seven Sudanese migrants were found dead after their vehicle broke down in the Libyan desert, leaving them stranded for 11 days without food or water. The survivors, including five children, were rescued by emergency crews and are receiving medical checks.
The incident occurred when a car carrying 34 Sudanese nationals crossed Libya’s border from Chad into a deserted path used by smugglers. The migrants were discovered in the sand dunes after losing all hope of survival.
“It was a dire situation,” said Ebrahim Belhassan, director of the Kufra Ambulance and Emergency Services. “The survivors were almost about to die, severely dehydrated and showing signs of distress and trauma.”
A total of 22 people were rescued, including five children, who are receiving medical checks. Five others remain missing, with slim hopes of survival in the vast desert.
The incident highlights the risks faced by migrants attempting to cross Libya on their way to Europe. The country’s location makes it a main transit point for those fleeing war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East.
