The Sacramento Kings have parted ways with head coach Mike Brown, citing a disappointing start to the season. With an 13-18 record, the team is last in the Pacific Division and has lost 12 of its last 17 games. Assistant coach Doug Christie will take over as interim coach for the remainder of the season.
The move comes after a one-point loss to the Detroit Pistons on Thursday night, which saw Brown fired just before the team’s flight to Los Angeles for Saturday’s matchup against the Lakers. Brown had been coaching the Kings since 2023 and had previously served as head coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Lakers.
Brown, 54, was named Coach of the Year in 2023 after turning around the Kings from a 30-win season to a 48-34 mark. He signed a three-year extension with the team in June but reportedly disagreed on salary terms with the front office. The Kings’ new management has decided to move forward without Brown.
Christie, who joined the coaching staff as an assistant under Alvin Gentry, will lead the team for now. Despite the tough start to the season, NBA legend Steve Jones Jr. expressed his optimism about the league’s overall quality on Twitter, saying “The NBA is fantastic.” The Kings are set to resume their season on Saturday against the Lakers.
