Guitarist Mike Campbell explained why he never confronted Tom Petty about his struggles with drug abuse before the rock legend’s 2017 death. According to Campbell, Petty’s private life was personal and respected by those close to him.
“The sides of [Petty’s] personality” made it difficult for Campbell to get close to him, but there was also love and respect in their relationship. The two kept their private lives separate, limiting socializing off tour. When asked why he didn’t confront Petty about his decline, Campbell said, “I don’t torture myself.” He emphasized that Petty knew Campbell knew about his struggles, and that there was an understanding between them.
Campbell recalled a conversation where Petty expressed his determination to continue touring despite health concerns. The guitarist said, “We’ll write some more songs, make another record.” This plan seemed like business as usual for the duo, with manager Tony Dimitriades offering options like postponing the tour or getting surgery first. Campbell has no regrets about continuing to work with Petty.
Since Petty’s death, Campbell and Neil Finn joined Fleetwood Mac as replacements for Lindsey Buckingham. Campbell recently released a memoir called Heartbreaker, which details his career with Petty.
