Mike Johnson Stands Firm on Government Shutdown

Speaker Mike Johnson refuses to budge on his stance regarding a potential compromise to end the government shutdown. He claims not having anything to negotiate and blames Senate Democrats for refusing an offer by Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-South Dakota) to hold a vote on extending Affordable Care Act subsidies after the shutdown ends.

Johnson’s uncharacteristically angry demeanor has garnered praise from some conservative lawmakers, but also carries potential risks, including losing patience with his own party members and the public blaming Republicans for the shutdown.

Historically, the House has followed the Senate’s lead in policy discussions, but Johnson has managed to get the Senate to follow the House’s lead on numerous occasions this year. This change in dynamic is due to Johnson earning Trump’s backing and trust.

Despite criticism from Democrats and members of his own party, Johnson stands firm, citing that having the House in session could undermine his efforts to pass conservative legislation. He believes that there are no perfect approaches, but his current tactic has contributed to the prolonged standoff.

As the shutdown continues, Johnson may face increased pressure to bring the House back to pass legislation that would fund the government for a longer period. However, he remains resolute, insisting that senators must take responsibility for ending the shutdown.
