Mike Williams has decided to retire from professional football, citing an injury that made him Physically Unable to Perform (PUP). The 31-year-old wide receiver re-joined the Los Angeles Chargers in free agency but will no longer be on the team.
Justin Herbert and Derwin James Jr., his teammates, expressed their respect and support for Williams’ decision. Herbert called Williams a friend and teammate, saying he would always be there for him, regardless of the game’s outcome.
Williams was set to provide a key target for Herbert in the Chargers’ offense, but his absence leaves a void. The team will now rely on players like Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston, Jalen Reagor, Tre’Harris, and KeAndre Lambert-Smith to fill the gap.
Herbert remembered Williams as a clutch player who made big plays during critical moments in games. He recalled several standout performances from Williams’ career, including his 2022 one-handed catch against the Rams and his 2021 performance that propelled the Chargers into overtime.
Williams’ retirement marks the end of an era for the Chargers, but the team remains committed to competing with a new crop of players.
