Miley Cyrus Celebrates New Album ‘Something Beautiful’ with Ambitious Experimentation

Miley Cyrus has finally arrived at a place of self-assurance, having recently celebrated her 2023 smash “Flowers” and its subsequent Grammy wins. Her ninth studio album, “Something Beautiful,” is a victory party of sorts, marking a new era where chart success isn’t the only metric that matters.

The 32-year-old singer has nothing to prove anymore, thanks in part to her recent co-sign from BeyoncĂ©, who has navigated similar transitions with her own successful albums. “Something Beautiful” takes a cue from BeyoncĂ©’s 2013 self-titled surprise album, being a visual project accompanied by a short film set to release on June 6.

The standalone album showcases Cyrus’ genre-bending boldness, blending neo-soul, prog-rock, and more in a way reminiscent of Prince. The title track is one of the best things she’s ever recorded, setting a high bar for the album with its D’Angelo-esque sound and Pink Floyd-inspired instrumentation.

Other standout tracks include “End of the World,” an apocalyptic retro-bop that channels Stevie Nicks, and “More to Lose,” a heart-wrenching breakup ballad that hints at Cyrus’ past relationship with Liam Hemsworth. The album also features collaborations with Brittany Howard and Naomi Campbell on electrodance tracks.

While some of the songs feel like a retreat from earlier experimentation, “Golden Burning Sun” and “Pretend You’re God” set a blissful summer romance mood. The album concludes with the psych-tinged ballad “Give Me Love,” leaving listeners yearning for that very thing.
