As my six-year-old laptop approaches its midlife, it’s hard to believe that many users are still struggling with the looming deadline of October 14th, 2025, when Windows 10 will reach the end of its life period. This means no new security updates or features for millions of users worldwide.
Over 50% of users are currently running Windows 10, and this figure is decreasing. However, a large proportion of the world’s 1.6 billion Windows PCs will still be using the outdated operating system on October 14th, 2025. This poses significant risks to user security, as computers without updates can become vulnerable to malware.
The decision not to provide free security updates for Windows 10 is a major concern, especially considering the environmental impact of producing and disposing of new devices. With millions of functional computers potentially being replaced, emissions will increase.
Microsoft has stated that it will continue to offer security updates for an additional year at a fee, but this approach is unsustainable in the long run. Users are left with little choice but to either pay for extended support or risk compromising their computer’s security. It’s essential for Microsoft to reconsider its decision and provide free security updates for Windows 10 until it’s no longer economically viable.
The world needs to move away from a culture of disposability, where electronics are seen as disposable products. By removing the ‘death sentence’ on older computers like mine, Microsoft can demonstrate its commitment to sustainability.
