A new study suggests that the US funding cuts to disease treatment and prevention programs in developing countries could lead to tens of millions of deaths, including children. The second Trump administration’s cut-and-run approach has resulted in the defunding or disarray of life-saving global health programs, shuttered by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, led by Elon Musk.
The study models the impact of nearly $13 billion in US funding being zeroed out, forecasted to increase global death and suffering through 2040. It projects an additional 15 million HIV/AIDS deaths, 2 million tuberculosis casualties, and 8 million child fatalities.
Family planning programs are also severely impacted, with tens of millions of new unplanned pregnancies (40-55 million) expected. This would lead to as many as 16 million “unsafe abortions” counter to the administration’s stated pro-life agenda.
The study warns that continued funding cuts would reverse decades of progress in global health and send levels of deaths and disease soaring since the 1990s. A return to the status quo level from 2024 commitments is essential to avoid this mass suffering.
