Warner Bros.’ “A Minecraft Movie” is set to hit theaters this weekend, with Thursday previews raking in $10.55 million at the box office. The film’s projected opening weekend haul ranges from $65 million to $90 million, with a worldwide total of $135 million to $150 million.
The movie adaptation of the popular sandbox video game follows normal people who are transported into the Overworld, where they must master Minecraft skills and defeat in-game enemies to return home. Starring Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Emma Myers, the cast also includes Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Coolidge, Sebastian Hansen, and Rachel House.
Video game adaptations have had a mixed track record at the box office, but “Minecraft” seems poised for success after last year’s “Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which grossed $1.3 billion. The movie’s family-friendly nature is expected to appeal to fans of the game, who may be more willing to support it than some other video game adaptations.
