Nvidia has created a mini “desktop supercomputer” that can fit in a bag and is nearly 1,000 times more powerful than the best laptops. Dubbed “Project Digits,” this device is designed to power local AI processing and data science applications.
The Project Digits mini PC is powered by an Nvidia GB10 Grace Blackwell Superchip, which houses separate components on a single chip to reduce data transfer time. The superchip features an Nvidia Blackwell graphics card, an Nvidia Grace processor, 128 gigabytes of memory, and 4 terabytes of SSD storage.
Compared to laptops, the device is approximately 1,000 times more powerful, making it suitable for researchers in robotics, computer vision, and autonomous systems who need faster experimentation, fine-tuning, and scaling solutions.
“We’re excited about what breakthroughs Project DIGITS will enable,” said Raquel Urtasun, a professor of computer science at the University of Toronto. The device can provide 1 petaFLOPS of power, which is less than the world’s most powerful supercomputers but significantly more powerful than most desktop PCs and laptops.
With this mini PC, researchers can run large language models that would require tapping into massive data centers via the cloud. Two Project Digits devices can be connected to achieve 405 billion parameters, compared to the approximately 175 billion parameters of GPT-3.5.
